Diesel Exhaust Fuel (DEF)

DEF, or Urea as it is also referred to, is a non-toxic, non-hazardous, non-flammable, non-polluting fluid that poses no threat to humans, animals, equipment, or the environment.  DEF is comprised of 32.5% of automotive grade urea and 67% deionized water.  When stored as recommended, between 12°F- 86°F, DEF’s shelf life will be greater than one year.  In fact, DEF is slightly alkaline with a pH of approximately 9- about the same pH as baking soda, as illustrated in the diagram to the right.

In cold environments, DEF is subject to freeze at temperatures at or below 11°F.  However, if DEF does freeze, start up and normal operation of vehicles will not be inhibited.  The SCR system is designed to provide heating for the DEF tank and supply lines.  DEF does not alter or become destroyed if freezing occurs, simple thawing brings DEF back to its normal state.

The availability of DEF is not an issue.  A vast network of North American major truck stops have already committed to carrying DEF.  Pilot, Flying J, Travel Center of America, and Love’s are among some of the larger truck stop lines to commit, additionally DEF can be found at various parts distribution centers, OEM outlets, Cummins outlets and independent distributors throughout North America.

In addition to the vast availability throughout North America, DEF costs are expected to range between $2-4 per gallon with the best prices available to DEF purchased in bulk. Recommended usage of DEF is approximately 1 gallon of DEF per 50 gallons of fuel. A DEF usage calculator is available to estimate your custom DEF usage.

With vast distribution commitments of DEF in place across North America, we are confident that SCR Technology is the best choice to meet 2010 Emissions requirements.
